Join Photo-Africa as we set out to photograph the animals of the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary.
The 6000 hectare SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary, situated approximately 60km’s from the town of Tzaneen, is home to numerous rescued and rehabilitated wild animals including red hartebeest, waterbuck, giraffe, zebras, rhinos, hippos and elephants. Some very elusive and rare creatures like pangolin and aardvark have also chosen of their own accord to make this protected reserve their home. Wild leopard and cheetahs roam freely and a pack of rescued African Wild Dogs will be introduced shortly. Many small predators like serval, caracal and civets can also be seen in the reserve and the Sanctuary’s large predator centre is home to 16 lions.
From 19 to 21 November 2010 Photo-Africa will be hosting a photographic safari at the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary. Apart from photographing the various animals on the reserve, we will also take some time to photograph the animals in the various, natural enclosures. This will be the perfect opportunity to work on your wildlife photography as there will be ample opportunities to ask questions, work the subjects and learn from the photo leaders and other photographers on the safari. During the weekend there will be informal lectures during which slideshows and discussions will focus on both the technical and artistic elements of wildlife photography as well as the post processing of images. Various assignments through the weekend will keep you focused and keep the creativity flowing. More importantly, apart from a great weekend of African wildlife photography you will also be supporting conservation.
Photo-Africa will be donating 100% of the profits from this safari to the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary.
This photographic safari will be led by Gerry van der Walt. Gerry is a wildlife photographer, lodge manager and field guide who combines a passion for nature photography with an in depth knowledge of African wildlife. Grant Marcus, an accomplished photographer and experienced field guide, will be assisting on this photographic safari.
Please note that this safari is limited to 8 photographers.

Photographic Goals
Our main goal during this safari is to photograph the wildlife of the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary. Some of our photographic goals will include:
• Africa’s Big 5 and Hippo
• Endangered Animals Such As Cheetah and Wild Dog
• General Game
• African Landscapes
• African sunrises and sunsets
Apart from the above you will also have ample time to enjoy SanWild’s Bukisa Tented Camp. In between the game drives there will always be an opportunity to discuss photographic techniques, and do informal photo crit sessions with the photo leaders on the safari.
Safari Itinerary
Day 1 (19 November)
Arrival at SanWild around lunchtime. After settling in we will meet for a brief of the weekend to discuss our photographic goals before heading out on our first game drive. After our first photographic outing we will return to the camp for a slideshow presentation where the photo leaders will discuss some of the finer details of wildlife photography. Dinner and a few drinks around the fire will end off our first day.
Day 2 (20 November)
A cup of coffee will get us ready for our morning drive. The itinerary for the day will depend largely on what animals are in the enclosures at the time but since we have the whole camp to ourselves we can take our time in searching for and working the best photographic opportunities. The whole day will be spent photographing the animals of SanWild with a return to the camp for lunch. Before dinner we will have an informal discussion around some of the images taken during the day and discuss how post processing can influence your images. Dinner and drinks around the fire will end off the day.
Day 3 (21 November)
An early morning game drive will take us of one more photographic outing into the reserve in order for us to try and photograph some of the species we have not yet seen or you can simply focus on those last few grab shots of the SanWild Wildlife Sanctuary. After returning to the camp for breakfast a slideshow of the images form the weekend will wrap up our safari.
