Video of the Month | Lions Roaring in the Madikwe Game Reserve

This is the second in our new monthly feature of wildlife videos. Our first contribution by Craig Catton of 14 lions on an impala kill has generated a lot of interest! You can see this spectacular footage here.

Lions are featured again this month, with footage of two majestic males roaring in the Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa.

The sound of male lions roaring has to be one of the most incredible things to hear in the african bush. The Lions’ repertoire of vocalisations is large and varies in intensity and pitch. Lions tend to roar in a very characteristic manner, starting with a few deep, long roars that trail off into a series of shorter ones. They most often roar at night with the sound reported to be heard from a distance of up to 8 kilometres away. Roaring is used to advertise the animal’s presence within an area and plays a crucial role in maintaining territorial boundaries.

Do you have any interesting footage of animal behaviour taken in one of South Africa’s Game Reserves? We would love to see it and potentially feature it on our website. Send a link to info@moyawatenga.co.za and we’ll get back to you!
